Industrial Base

The industrial base in South Australia is well represented by a committed, mature and highly engaged global Defence & Naval shipbuilding and sustainment supply chain, delivering strong national economic benefits and improved sustainment outcomes.

Since the award of the future build program contracts, major investments in supply chain development has been underway.  South Australia’s shipbuilders have been engaging parent companies to transfer intellectual property, to develop specialised skills and to transfer technical know-how.

The development of sovereign capabilities through well-developed Australian Government endorsed Australian Industry Capability (AIC) plans are now entering their second and third years.  These plans have seen strong engagement across the Australian industrial landscape with contracted commitments through the global supply chains reaching back to the United Kingdom, the United States and France.  Today some nine hundred organisations have registered interest in participation with many already committed to a South Australian presence.

South Australia is the only state with the expertise and infrastructure to undertake the specialised welding of submarine pressure hulls. This expertise, combined with our highly competitive construction, labour and living costs, has brought ongoing investment from companies who will continue to invest in the state, establishing manufacturing, support operations as well as highly specialised testing facilities and laboratories.
