Leading Edge R&D

Innovation is the result of talent, skills, and a culture in which knowledge is shared and experimentation is a way of life. In South Australia, the state’s defence companies, research organisations and educational institutions team together to find innovative solutions for the ADF and the nation’s defence industry.

South Australia has a long history of successful defence research underpinned by education and industry alliances.

This history has been powered by the DSTO at Edinburgh and University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and Flinders University which cover a wide spectrum of specialist R&D, with concentrations in:

  • systems engineering and integration
  • photonics
  • modelling and simulation
  • robotics
  • electronic warfare, and
  • communications and networking.

South Australia’s defence science credentials will be even brighter when the first international satellite of the world-renowned Royal Institution arrives, with its state-of-the-art communication technologies. This is the oldest and most prestigious research body in the world, and RI Australia will be a nerve centre for science set in the heart of Adelaide.

In 2007 the Premier’s Science and Research Fund committed $2.4 million to fund further defence research in South Australia.
